Madison County Launches "Reader Nation" Initiative to Strengthen Early Literacy

Exciting things are happening in Madison County!

The Madison County Board of Education has recently been awarded a grant from the Sandra Dunagan Deal Center for Early Language & Literacy at Georgia College & State University. This investment has led to the formation of a new Community Coalition focused on improving literacy outcomes for children from birth through age five.

Known as Reader Nation, this initiative is centered around the belief that we can build stronger readers together. The grant will support efforts to strengthen and sustain foundational literacy skills from birth through age five, helping ensure children enter school prepared for long-term academic success.

The mission of Reader Nation is simple but powerful: to transform Raider Nation into READER Nation through the collective efforts of community partners, families, educators, and childcare providers who are committed to improving early literacy outcomes across Madison County.

A key component of the initiative will be providing education, resources, and support for parents and childcare providers, recognizing the vital role they play in a child's early development.

The Chamber is excited to see this collaborative effort take shape and encourages our community to stay tuned as additional information, resources, and opportunities to get involved are shared throughout the summer and the 2026-2027 school year.

Reader Nation Summer Tip #1: Stop Scrolling and Start Talking

Wondering how you can support your child this summer?

One of the most important, and easiest, things you can do for young children is simply have a conversation.

Talking with children helps build vocabulary, language skills, listening abilities, and confidence. Whether you're driving in the car, grocery shopping, cooking dinner, or taking a walk, every conversation is an opportunity for learning.

Ask questions, encourage storytelling, talk about what you see around you, and most importantly, listen. These everyday interactions help create the strong literacy foundation children need to thrive in school and beyond.

Sometimes the most powerful learning moments happen when we put down our screens and start talking.
